CONFIRMATION WILL BE ON THURSDAY 1ST MARCH 2018

WELCOME TO YEAR 7 

 

We have a busy but fun year ahead learning new and exciting things, keep an eye on our page to keep up to date with everything we're doing and learning!

 

Autumn Term

 

Maths

In maths we are covering a whole host of topics including:

 The 4 operations of maths - adding, subtraction, multiplication and division. 

Area and perimeter

Multiples and factors

Symmetry and reflection

Squared, Cubed, Prime and Triangular numbers. 

Tally and bar charts

Venn and Carroll Diagrams to sort information. 

Mean, Mode, Median and Range.

Scale

Literacy

Our literacy topics this term include:

Proof Reading

Plurals

Speech marks

Parts of speech

Pronouns

Prefixes

 

A big push is on Accelerated Reading, so get reading and get quizzing.

 

We will be reading the novel "Under the Hawthorn Tree"

 

Our creative writing genres this term are Balanced Arguments and Biographies. 

 

World Around Us

Our topic is The Victorians including Inventions.

​The children will research many aspects of the victorians including:-

Famous Victorians

Victorian Childhood

Victorian Inventions

Victorian Belfast

Victorian Christmas

 

Religion

Preparation for Confirmation will begin.

Discuss with your child the name they wish to take on for Confirmation, (it must be a Saint's name)

The dates forService of Light and Confirmation has not been announced yet but we will let you know as soon as we find out.

 

PE

We will be swimming on Monday Mornings after Halloween. So remember to back your swimming gear on a Sunday evening.

 

Seesaw

We are also launching Seesaw across the school as a great way to keep in touch with parents. Zap the QR code in your child's notebook to see the fabulous work being done by your child.

SPRING TERM

We have an exciting Spring Term ahead, packed with interesting activities.

 

Maths

In maths we will be covering a host of topics including:

All these activities will include problem solving and development of mathematical language.

Our class novel is the second book from The Children of the Famine Trilogy, "Wildflower Girl".

The writing genres we will be studying are Explanation Writing, focusing on "The Water Cycle", and narrative writing, using "Boy" by Roald Dahl as a platform for independent writing.

 

The World Around Us

Our topic will be water, we will be looking at the following areas:-

Why do we need water

The water cycle.

Reducing the waste of water.

The children will carry out experiments exploring how to filter water and what can be flushed.

Using ICT the pupils will present their research.

 

Religion

Confirmation will take place on Thursday 1st March 2018.   The pupils will select a Saint, who's name they will take.  The children will do independent research on this saint.  The children will learn Confirmation Hymns, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit.  Fr. Aidan will visit the class and help with the preparation for Confirmation, talking to the children about the meaning of Confirmation and he will bring in the Oil of Chrism and discuss its significance.

 

P.E.

Swimming will continue. (So remember to get the swimming gear ready on Sunday nights.)

 

ICT

Year 7 pupils will be participating in an hour of code each week, using the apps Hopscotch, Scratch and Swift Playground.  They will continue to use a variety of apps to record and present their work.

 

Seesaw

Remember to check your Seesaw regular to see sample of work your child has posted and for messages from the teacher.

 

Mandarin

We will continue with our work about Chinese Culture and learning to speak Mandarin with Min.
