Year 7

Welcome to Year Seven

The teachers in Year Seven are Mrs Malone (Year Band Leader), Miss Mc Namee, Mr Mc Bride and Mr Muldoon. 

 

Autumn Term Topics:

 

Numeracy:

In numeracy the children will be looking at a huge variety of topics in their first term. These include

Area and perimeter of compound shapes.

Place value in numbers up to 9 digits

Mean, Median, Mode and Range

Data Handling

Problem Solving

Percentages, Decimals and Fractions.

Revision of all basic number functions.

 

Year 7 children should be working on revision of table facts and properties of 2D/3D shapes each night.

 

Literacy:

Literacy is broken into three distinct areas of learning.

 

Comprehension:

The children's reading ability will continue to grow through their work on comprehension skills.   All children will explore a range of fiction and non-fiction texts and respond to questions pitched at their level.  

 

Comprehension skills will be developed further through work on the class novel, Under the Hawthorn Tree.

 

 

Grammar:

The children will look at a range of different topics in their grammar work this term which includes:

Revision of all parts of speech

Direct and Indirect Speech

Proof Reading

Suffixes and Prefixes

A range of other topics.

 

 

Writing:

The children are currently compiling their own balanced argument report based on a Victorian Workhouse and their novel, Under the Hawthorn Tree.

In their programme they have looked at:

The structure of a balanced report

The main features of a balanced report

Identified the difference between arguments for and arguments against

Planned a balanced report

Drafted and edited their own balanced report.

 

 

World Around Us:

Children will be taking an indepth look into the Victorian world this year.  To help explore their topic, they will be using a range of practical, text-based and UICT resources.   Some key areas of learning to be explored are:

Victorian Inventions

Important dates/timelines in the Victorian Era

The Great Hunger

Expansion of the British Empire

Famous Victorians

Victorian Authors

Life as a Victorian Child

 

Religion:

The children are currently using the Grow in Love Programme.
