Year 7

Welcome to Year Seven

The Year Seven teaching team includes Mrs. Kelly (Year Band Leader), Mr. Rea, Mr. McBride, and Mr. Muldoon.

Autumn Term Topics:

Numeracy:

During the first term, students will cover a wide range of topics, such as:

  • Area and perimeter of compound shapes
  • Place value in numbers up to 9 digits
  • Mean, median, mode, and range
  • Data handling
  • Problem solving
  • Percentages, decimals, and fractions
  • Revision of all basic number functions

Year 7 students should revise table facts and properties of 2D/3D shapes each night.

Literacy:

Literacy is divided into three main areas:

Comprehension:

Students will enhance their reading skills through comprehension exercises. They will explore various fiction and non-fiction texts and answer questions suited to their level. Comprehension skills will be further developed through the class novel, Under the Hawthorn Tree.

Grammar:

This term, students will cover various grammar topics, including:

  • Revision of all parts of speech
  • Direct and indirect speech
  • Proofreading
  • Suffixes and prefixes
  • Other related topics

Writing:

Students are working on a balanced argument report based on a Victorian Workhouse and their novel, Under the Hawthorn Tree. They will explore:

  • The structure of a balanced report
  • The main features of a balanced report
  • The differences between arguments for and against
  • Planning a balanced report
  • Drafting and editing their own balanced report

World Around Us:

This year, students will delve into the Victorian era. They will use various practical, text-based, and UICT resources to explore topics such as:

  • Victorian inventions
  • Important dates/timelines in the Victorian era
  • The Great Hunger
  • Expansion of the British Empire
  • Famous Victorians
  • Victorian authors
  • Life as a Victorian child

Religion:

Students are currently using the Grow in Love Programme and Flourish. Additionally, they will be preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation, a significant milestone in their Catholic faith. This sacrament is important as it strengthens their bond with the Church and deepens their commitment to living a Christian life.
